Start spring off with a bang at this urban ultra on a paved greenway trail in Alcoa, TN (near Knoxville). This event started in 2013 and has quickly become very popular, always filling before the registration closing date. With distances from the 1 mile family fun run/walk to the ultra crazy 100 miler, there's something for everyone. Runners score some great swag, enjoy the optional tasty pre-race pasta dinner (with vegetarian option), are pampered by some really nice volunteers, enjoy lots of heated aid station support, warming stations, camaraderie with plenty of other crazy ultra runners, and some really cool finishers awards. This is a great race for first time and seasoned ultra runners alike. Walkers are welcome too. We’re here to have a good time!

Need some good reasons to get off the couch?  How about these?  Run off those extra winter pounds, try out any fancy new running gear you got for Christmas and have been itching to use, try an "easy" ultra before you attempt a big, hairy one on a remote trail, try a longer distance than you’ve done before, to prove you have an ultra in you, to run with friends, because you can....

So...get your summertime bod in shape by running, walking (or crawling!) multiple loops on approximately 5.5 miles of the lighted, paved Alcoa-Maryville Greenway linear path along Pistol Creek.  Pick your distance.  Options include a mini Pistol 1 mile family freindly fun run/walk, a 10 mile, then the full bore Pistol Ultra 50K, 50 mile, 100K, and 100 miler.  There is also a 2 or 3 person relay option for the 50K distance. The 3 relay legs are only about 10.35 miles long each. For a two person relay, one runner will do two legs. The exchange zone is near the start/finish area.

This will be held on the Alcoa-Maryville Greenway, Tennessee (Knoxville’s McGee Tyson airport is just a couple miles from the start.)  The 50K starts at 7:55 AM and the 100K/100 Miler start at 8 AM Saturday morning, March 17, 2018. (Times are Eastern Daylight Savings Time.) The 50 Miler starts at 8 PM Saturday evening. The mini Pistol 10 Miler starts at 7:55 AM Sunday morning and the 1 mile Family Fun Run/Walk at 8 AM Sunday. All races end 30 hours later (18 hours for the 50 Miler, 6 hours for the 10 Miler) at 2 PM Sunday. The last official 100 mile finisher wins the coveted Slowest Draw Award!

Schedule:

- 1 mile and 10 mile packet pick-up 7-7:45 AM (In Pistol Corral inside school commons area)

- 10 mile race starts - 7:55 AM

- 1 mile family fun run/walk starts - 8 AM

- All races end - 2 PM Sunday

Course:

All distances are USATF certified (see maps below). They are also internationally certified by IAAF/AIMS. Tennessean winners in all distances will be submitted for inclusion in the Tennessee State ultra records here. A big shout out to the Tennessee record keeper, Buck Jones, for all his work to post and keep up with these. Will you set a Tennessee record? Maybe even a regional, national, or possibly an international record? Come find out!

We’ll have a large course map posted at the Info area in the Pistol Corral at the school (There is a link to a downloadable version below). The course is a fairly flat, paved, generally eight foot wide greenway that is lit at nighttime. It meanders along the Pistol Creek (hence the name for the event), through Alcoa, by several small bodies of water, and over to Maryville's Bicentennial Greenbelt Park.  It is a linear route approximately 5 miles long with a keyhole configuration at the southern end. All distances start at the new Alcoa High School (1205 Lodge Street, Alcoa, TN) and run south about 4.5 miles, then return to the start; then continue north around a half mile, then return to start. The Foothills Striders will be hosting the main aid station at the start/finish and the "Near World Famous" Woody Aid Station (612 LeBlanc Street, Maryville, TN) will be about a half mile from the end of the 4.5 mile southern section. This means you'll pass an aid station every 1-4 miles on each loop.

There is less than 300’ of elevation change per loop. EASY! ☺

There are numerous side trails. We will have the main route marked with signage, multi-colored chalk markings/duct tape/arrows on the pavement, and possibly cones and/or orange flags on wires stuck in the ground (excluding inside Maryville city limits). Cutting corners or otherwise not running the entire route is not allowed and may result in disqualification.

This is NOT a closed course. There will be people walking their dogs, runners, bikers, baby strollers, etc (depending on the weather and time of day/night).  Many wear personal music devices and may be completely oblivious to you approaching.  However, they have an equal right to be there too. Let's show them how courteous ultra runners are!

There are a few minor road crossings. Other than the police escort at the start, no one will stop traffic for you. Use common sense (stop, look both ways, etc.). Do not attempt traffic control at intersections. Wait until traffic has cleared before crossing. To avoid misunderstandings and/or other issues, please do not wave "thank you" at traffic crossings inside Maryville city limits.

Awards:

There are some REALLY cool finishers awards.  They will be awarded immediately upon completion. Awards are not doubled (except for course records, Marksmanship, Athena/Clydesdale, and Slowest Draw). We will have USPS Medium Flat Rate mailing boxes and packing supplies available for those wanting to mail their awards home and not risk confiscation with airport security. Simply package it up, seal and label it and we'll do the rest. The cost will be $15 to cover the postage and packing supplies. Please be prepared to pay with check or cash. Give us 2-3 weeks to mail them out after the event.
